How would you like to celebrate your 100th birthday? For one British man, it seems that a dream may have come true: he is getting free pints for life. Arthur Johnson, a newly-minted centenarian is raising his glass and toasting to his longevity, though Mark Canny, his friend and the landlord of The Bowling Green may not be quite as cheerful. Will Johnson live for another hundred years–all while drinking for free? While unlikely, the agreement is making waves after the British man appears to have an endless thirst for beer.
Canny says that about seven years ago, he promised Johnson that if he ever “reached the grand old age of a hundred, I’d offer him free beer for life,” he continued, “Little did I realize that my profits would be taking such a slump.”
Could one man really have such a devastating impact on a bar? Only time will tell. While Canny has made good on his offer and continues to serve up pints on the house, Johnson seems to have no qualms about taking full advantage of his birthday gift that keeps on giving.
“Oh he’ll be bankrupt by the time I’ve finished,” Johnson said of his friend and landlord, Canny.
Johnson reached his 100-year milestone this past March, and shows no signs of slowing down–presuming the bar is able to stay open. Only time will tell if he drinks his landlord out of business, but it appears that Canny has no plans of going back on his offer to the new centurion.
