The Craft Beer Black Market Does Some Disgusting Things

Recently, the dark corner of the the beer industry was unveiled: The Black Market. This underground marketplace is figuratively and literally disgusting.

The first level of disgust comes from the resale market. There are places online where private beer sellers find the grey area between legal and illegal practices to sell rare bottles of brew. Some for hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Much like the insane markup on a piece of art, this brokering takes beer out of the hands of those who love it and creates an impossible market for them.

However, the most disturbing aspect is the black-market reselling of tap beers. Here is where the reselling gets really fishy. From bottling a beer in a Porta Potty to selling rare beer in a Ziploc baggie, there is no shortage of horrifying tales of sanitation and sanity.

How to put an end to this? Stop “feeding the beast” by buying on the black market. Simple enough, but we suspect it won’t end. Wherever there is money to be made, there will be shady practices like this. Sad, but true.
