President Trump has been sounding the alarm on the potential dangers of North Korea since 1999. Nearly 20 years ago, Trump contended it wouldn’t be long before the totalitarian regime would draft up nuclear warheads—have them pointed straight at the United States. A nuclear North Korea has been on everyone’s minds as of late, but President Trump’s been concerned about it for decades.

In an interview with Tim Russert on Meet The Press, which aired on October 24, 1999, Trump spoke about a diplomatic mission for preventing the spread of nuclear warfare.

“Jimmy Carter, who I really like, he went over there. It was so soft. These people are laughing at us,” he commented.

“They think we’re a bunch of dummies,” Trump added.

At the time, Trump was adamant that something needed to remedy the North Korea situation. He stated, “Do you want to do it in five years when they have warheads all over the place—every one of them pointing to New York City, to Washington and every one of us; is that when you want to do it—or do you want to do something now?”

Well, it’s been a lot longer than five years, but Trump is now in the position he practically predicted he’d be in—nearly two decades ago. Back in 1999, Trump discussed how he’d handle the issue with his negotiating skills. Trump also contended the danger of a nuclear North Korea simply couldn’t be understated, noting it was perhaps even more important than domestic issues like social security.

Clearly, Trump hasn’t changed that much over the years, as he recently tweeted about how he wanted to ensure the United States remained at the top of the global food chain. In one tweet, he declared, “there will never be a time that we are not the most powerful nation in the world!”

One thing’s for sure; to keep threats at bay, it’s essential to have a strong president in office. As Trump pointed out in 1999, being “soft” won’t keep America safe.
