An 11-year-old Malaysian boy is now dead after being physically abused at an Islamic school. He was reportedly beaten so badly that his legs had to be amputated before he eventually succumbed to his wounds. Photos of his badly bruised and swollen legs have gone viral online. His legs were reportedly “swollen with an infection” and had to removed to stop the infection from spreading.

The 11-year-old boy isn’t the only child at the Islamic school in the state of Johor to be a victim of abuse. District police chief Rahmat Othman told Reuters that multiple children at the religious school are whipped on their legs with a water hose by an assistant warden when they defy the rules.
Police have reported that the assistant warden has been arrested on Saturday.
“We are now waiting for the medical and autopsy reports from the hospital before taking further action,” Rahmat said.
After the incident, many influential people like former information minister of Malaysia, Zainuddin Maidin are asking for tahfiz (Quran recitation) schools to be shut down.
The chairman of the Parent Action Group for Education, Noor Azimah Abdul Rahim, told Reuters: “To this day, we do not know who are actually in charge of regulating tahfiz schools.”
Malaysia Prime Minister, Najib Razak, also chimed in on Twitter: “I would like the investigation into this case to be speeded up and for legal action to be taken if any offenses were committed.”
Najib who previously showed support for a bill that would allow Islamic schools to be a lot stricter backed down his support last month.
