Most types of stupidity aren’t illegal so many of us tend to become victimized when stupid people do stupid things. One of those stupid things is PURPOSEFULLY running into oncoming traffic. There is never a time and place where that is a good idea, no matter the circumstances. (Anyone wants to object that? Yeah, thought so!”

But there is also the kind of stupidity possessed by protestors who block traffic. And okay, maybe the protestor has a good point in his or her protesting but there are safer and smarter ways to protest. You don’t protest against the cruelty of alligators by jumping into an alligator-infested swamp. It sounds epic on paper but also sounds like Lunch to the alligators.

So, from now on, according to the legislature of North Carolina, if a driver hits a protestor who is blocking traffic “while exercising due care”, the driver will not face the full brunt of criminal charges, if any at all. BUT … “This bill does not allow for the driver of a vehicle to target protesters intentionally”

The bill, which passed the North Carolina House of Representatives with a 67-48 vote was initially introduced by Republican Justin Burr and “provides that a person driving an automobile while exercising due care is immune for civil liability for any injury to another if the injured person was participating in a demonstration or protest and blocking traffic.”

“As we’ve seen, time and time again, as folks run out in the middle of the streets and the interstates in Charlotte and attempt to block traffic,” Burr said. The Republican commented that he wants to ensure that “drivers don’t have to fear driving through Charlotte or anywhere in North Carolina.”

Even though Burr specifically stated that “this bill does not allow for the driver of a vehicle to target protesters intentionally. It does protect individuals who are rightfully trying to drive down the road,” Democrats still don’t agree with it saying that is purely “unconstitutional” because it applies only to situations in which the person hit “is participating in a protest or demonstration and is blocking traffic.”

But I think it’s just Democrats doing what Democrats do best — THWARTING PROGRESS!!
