President Donald Trump has made a proposal to Planned Parenthood that is now making headlines. He offered to continue funding the organization if it stops offering abortions.

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards has rejected the proposal and stated that using federal money to fund abortion is already not allowed. He says the group “will always stand for women’s ability to make decisions about their health and lives, without interference from politicians.”

Trump stands by his proposal to Planned Parenthood

“There is an opportunity for organizations to continue the important work they do in support of women’s health while not providing abortion services,” Trump told the New York Times.

There is even chatter among White House officials that Planned Parenthood can see an increase in funding if they comply with the Trump administration regarding abortion.

Despite disagreeing with the group’s view on abortions, Trump still believes they do very important and positive work.

During a broadcast debate, Trump said, “Millions and millions of women—cervical cancer, breast cancer—are helped by Planned Parenthood. I would defund it because I’m pro-life, but millions of women are helped by Planned Parenthood.”

Planned Parenthood has done a lot of good for millions of women over the years. However, 98 percent of women of reproductive age have never and probably will never seek medical care from Planned parenthood in any given year. Just look at the statistics. Planned Parenthood had 2.5-million clients in 2015, according to the group’s annual report. That is a 3.1-million drop in clients since 2006.

And now,  if the group doesn’t give in to Donald Trump’s terms, the numbers could drop even more.

Some people believe Trump’s offer is simply a show and an  “absurd play”—people like Dianne Max, who is a major donor to Planned Parenthood. She told The Times Trump had been “sympathetic to a woman’s right to choose until it was politically unpopular” for his presidential career.
